New short film festival to help region become movie-making destination

A NEWLY launched short film festival is part of a non-profit organisation’s vision to attract filmmakers to the Fraser Coast and establish a collaborative hub for industry professionals.

Screen Fraser Coast, a newly formed industry body, aims to create opportunities for local filmmakers, encourage industry collaboration, and position the region as a prime destination for film productions.

Screen Fraser Coast co-chair Amy Friesen said the short film festival and other initiatives would help retain talent and encourage professionals to work together on projects within the region.

“We’re keen to maintain the momentum created by the recent release of the feature film He Loves Me Not by local production company Fraser Coast Films and the launch of the Hervey Bay Film Festival last year,” she said.

“We have a fantastic film community on the Fraser Coast, and we need to bring everyone together, keep opportunities in our region, and foster growth.

“It’s about attracting production companies to film in our stunning region and providing the cast, crew, and support they need.”

Co-chair Samantha Gould highlighted that other regions have industry representatives dedicated to attracting filmmakers, and Fraser Coast should do the same.

“We see an opportunity for the Fraser Coast to be seen as a destination to film movies, which also helps to drive tourism,” she said. “We want to provide opportunities for those within the industry to connect, network, and create.”

Ms Gould said Screen Fraser Coast’s mission is to create a collaborative environment where filmmakers, talent, and industry professionals can thrive, while also promoting local projects and providing valuable resources.

“By connecting passionate individuals and organisations, Screen Fraser Coast can elevate the region’s cinematic presence and support the development of unique, impactful stories and productions,” she said.

With these initiatives, Screen Fraser Coast hopes to strengthen the region’s position as a thriving hub for the film industry while supporting local talent and attracting national and international productions.

Upcoming Screen Fraser Coast initiatives:

  • Events: The organisation will introduce a new short film festival, Fraser Shorts, with pop-up screenings and an awards night in October. Entries open on March 1 via FilmFreeway. Throughout the year, pop-up screenings of local and international films will be held, alongside industry Q&A sessions and networking events.
  • Training Workshops: Designed to help entry-level participants develop skills relevant to the film and creative arts industry. The workshops will also provide established local cast and crew with further training opportunities, ensuring they can gain work in the region’s growing industry.
  • Membership Hub: A new online directory will allow industry professionals to connect with one another. Screen Fraser Coast will also assist studios and film production companies looking to shoot in the region by offering access to a talent directory and providing location and scouting services. The first 100 members to sign up will receive free membership.
  • Community Engagement Initiatives: The organisation will collaborate with local schools, education bodies, Indigenous and community groups, and the tourism sector to develop programs that highlight the various aspects of filmmaking.
