Time to consider the long-term security of our beloved Carols?

THE HERVEY Bay Carols by Candlelight has evolved into the largest and most attended community event in the region, thanks to the dedication and vision of the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers Association.

Over the years, this event has grown from a small local gathering to a spectacular celebration that draws thousands of residents and visitors each year.

Their hard work and commitment have turned the Carols into an iconic event that captures the spirit of Christmas and brings the community together.

However, the growing pressures associated with organising this event have placed a significant strain on it, particularly with the rising costs of production and the constant need to secure sponsorship and partnership funding to cover expenses.

This is evident each year, with calls out to the community for financial support.

The ongoing financial challenge has led to the recognition that the event’s future sustainability requires additional concrete support.

Given the scale and importance of the event, I believe it would be beneficial for it to be handed over to Fraser Coast Tourism and Events (FCTE), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Council funds FCTE to the tune of more than $1.5M a year, with rate-payers money.

They have the infrastructure, staff, resources, and funding mechanisms in place to help alleviate the financial stress and logistical burdens currently faced by the current organising committee for the Carols by Candlelight.

FCTE is tasked with civic event management, and their established networks would ensure the Carols by Candlelight continues to thrive and grow in the years ahead.

Council is already a major financial partner in the Carols by Candlelight, and transitioning the event's management and budget to FCTE would surely result in Council not spending twice.

As Hervey Bay expands and demand for large-scale events increases, having a well-resourced entity like FCTE oversee the Carols would secure its future as a vibrant civic tradition.

This transition not only avoids unnecessary duplication of Council spending but also strengthens the foundation of one of Hervey Bay's most treasured celebrations.

Let's ensure the Carols by Candlelight remains a shining light in our community for years to come.
