THE SPIRIT of empowerment and progress echoed throughout the Hervey Bay Boat Club on Saturday, 8 March, as the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay hosted its annual International Women’s Day Breakfast.

With the theme “March Forward,” the event brought together a diverse group of 100 participants, including representatives from government, not-for-profit organisations, businesses, and educational institutions, all united in the shared mission of advancing gender equality.

The morning was marked by an inspiring panel discussion featuring three formidable women in local government: Councillors Michelle Byrne, Michelle Govers (Division 5 – Fraser Coast), and Sara Diana Faraj (Division 9 – Fraser Coast).

These trailblazers captivated the audience with their candid accounts of their journeys to leadership, shedding light on the challenges faced by women striving to make their mark in male-dominated spaces.

Breaking Barriers and Marching Forward

Through heartfelt personal stories, the panellists acknowledged the significant strides made towards gender equality but emphasised that the journey is far from over.

Issues such as breaking the glass ceiling, closing the gender pay gap, and ensuring the safety of women and girls remain at the forefront of the fight for progress.

“It’s not just about reaching leadership positions; it’s about making sure we create an environment where women feel safe, heard, and empowered to pursue their ambitions,” said Councillor Michelle Govers.

Echoing this sentiment, Councillor Sara Diana Faraj highlighted the importance of supporting and mentoring young women, ensuring that future generations inherit a landscape where equality is not just an aspiration, but a reality.

“Change happens when we uplift each other, when we challenge biases, and when we refuse to accept the status quo,” she said.

A Call to Action: Empower, Educate, Lead

The Zonta Club of Hervey Bay has long been an advocate for gender equality, and this annual event serves as a reminder of both the achievements and the work that still lies ahead.

Club President Michelle Lockwood delivered a stirring address, urging attendees to take an active role in shaping a more equitable society.

“We don’t have to be in a position of power to make a difference,” Lockwood emphasised. “Change happens in our daily lives—through the conversations we have, the way we support one another, and the moments when we challenge stereotypes, demand better policies, and create spaces where women feel valued and heard.”

Attendees left the event inspired and motivated to continue the march forward, recognising that true progress requires collective effort, determination, and a willingness to challenge systemic barriers.

As the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay continues its advocacy and initiatives to uplift women and girls, events like these serve as powerful reminders of what can be achieved when a community comes together in pursuit of a common goal.

The call to action was clear: it’s time to step up, lead, and keep marching forward toward a future where gender equality is not just an ideal, but a reality for all.
