Terra Tribe launches Community Composting
2 min read

TERRA Tribe Farm was established in 2020 by Matt and Elizabeth, a husband and wife team who grew up here in Hervey Bay.

After years of living a traditional lifestyle, they realised they wanted something more fulfilling than the standard 9 to 5 routine.

Driven by a desire for greater freedom and a closer connection to nature, the couple made a bold decision—they sold their family home and invested in a piece of land 35 minutes out of town.

Their vision for Terra Tribe Farm was to create a self-sustaining homestead where they could grow their own food, live off the land, and embrace a simpler, more intentional way of life.

“We arrived with two shipping containers, a caravan and our five children,” Elizabeth said.

“Five years on the farm is a working farm, we are growing our own food, raising our own meat, living low waste and moving towards sustainability.”

“We still face challenges but our passion continues and we are making progress every day.”

The family run several programs at Terra Tribe Farm, including Forest Kindy, Homeschooler, Afterschool, and School Holiday programs, all aimed at nurturing children's connection with nature and sustainable living.

Recently, they’ve introduced an exciting new program called Community Composting, designed to engage the local community in eco-friendly practices.

“Here at Terra Tribe Farm, we are passionate about leaving the earth better then we found it. One way is composting the enormous amount of food waste that is put into land fill.”

“7.3 million tonnes of food waste goes into landfill each year, that’s enough to fill 13,000 Olympic sized swimming pools.”

“Well, we want it!”

“All you have to do is collect your food waste and drop it off to us at the farm or the Pier markets.”

“We turn your food waste into compost, this process takes about six weeks.”

“This compost is then used to feed our chickens and pigs and in our market garden to produce food to put back into the community.”

“Each fortnight we will be at the Pier markets with our excess produce from the farm. Customers get to pay what they can.”
