CALLING all young writers: Mary Poppins Literary Competition returns for 2025.

Young writers on the Fraser Coast, it’s time to embark on an unexpected adventure!

The highly anticipated 2025 Mary Poppins Literary Competition is now open, offering a golden opportunity for creative minds to showcase their storytelling skills.

With the enchanting theme of “An Unexpected Adventure,” entrants can unleash their imagination in any direction, whether through a short story, a poem, or both.

The competition encourages participants to interpret the theme in their own unique way, making it a truly open-ended creative challenge.

The only condition? Entrants must either live or attend school on the Fraser Coast—a requirement that ensures local students have the exclusive opportunity to compete for one of Australia’s most prestigious young writers’ prizes, with a total prize pool of $2,000 up for grabs.

To enter, participants can pick up an entry form from any Fraser Coast Library.

The entry forms contain all the details for each year level, along with valuable tips from the judges on how to craft a compelling and well-presented submission.

Adding to the excitement, all entrants will be invited to the prize-winning ceremony at Gatakers Art Space during the beloved Mary Poppins Festival on Sunday, 28 September.

The event promises to be a celebration of creativity, literature, and the imaginative spirit of young writers.

The competition is an initiative of Mary Inc’s CityPoppins team, supported by the Cherry Tree Foundation in London - established by none other than P.L. Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins—along with the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the State Library of Queensland.

Mary Inc. President, Jacqui Elson-Green, emphasised the significance of the competition, calling it a “wonderful chance for budding authors to enter the world of fantasy, stretch their creativity, and generate new ideas—just as Pamela Travers did more than 90 years ago.”

For further details, interested participants can contact Jacqui Elson-Green at 0417 086 691 or email jacqui.elsongreen@gmail.com

So, young writers, pick up your pens, set your imagination free, and let the adventure begin!
