Due to a sporting injury, the past two weeks have seen me in countless waiting rooms—public hospitals, doctor’s offices, allied health clinics, and MRI facilities.
In each of these spaces, I couldn’t help but reflect on how easily one can fall into a routine most wouldn’t choose, reminding me of how blessed we are to be well.
While waiting, I spoke with an elderly man who was signing documentation; he paused to apologise for his handwriting, affected by Parkinson’s. He shared, “I’ve had this for 20 years, but I live well. The secret? Never stop moving.”
Life often lulls us into a sedentary pattern: transitioning from bed to phone, then to a screen at the office, and finally to the couch at home. We tend to easily entertain our children with devices, hesitant to let them ride bikes or explore beyond our sight.
This lifestyle can be exhausting—filled with mindless scrolling and passive entertainment while our nation grows sicker. Our minds, bodies, and souls suffer from a profound lack of movement.
So, how do we break this cycle? Movement is the key.
It encourages us to choose whole, real foods over processed takeout. A simple meal of chicken and lettuce in a wrap is not only healthier but also cheaper than feeding a family from a fast-food restaurant.
We often lament being time-poor, yet we lose hours on screens.
We complain about every cold or virus that comes our way, but what are we doing to strengthen our immune systems and create resilient bodies? When trapped in this relentless cycle, it becomes increasingly daunting to muster the energy to change.
If you’re able, take a walk, go for a jog, or enjoy a bike ride along the esplanade.
This community is rich with opportunities to move—gyms are everywhere, and team sports abound. Move with your kids and foster a love of activity.
If you find yourself stuck in a rut, reach out. Speak up. Send a message to a friend, share your desire to make positive changes, and watch how that support ignites your journey.
Remember: just don’t stop moving.
