WE are getting into the festive season. During this period, I see many people from out of town, interstate or overseas because they have hit a spot of bother. This is even more important for those who require medications and health conditions.
It can be challenging during this period, as like many businesses your medical centre and pharmacy may have reduced hours, as they too are having a well-deserved break.
Refill medications before the rush
Pharmacies often close or have limited hours during public holidays, so refill your prescriptions well in advance.
Many rural areas also have limited pharmacy access, so if you're heading to remote spots, pack enough medication for the entire stay and bring a bit extra for unexpected delays.
Check your medications’ storage instructions, for example Queensland’s heat and humidity can affect their stability.
Keep your health and medication summary handy
Write down a list of your health conditions, medications, dosages, allergies, and emergency contacts. Store this information in your phone or wallet in case you need medical attention in a new area.
Consider uploading this to your My Health Record, as this will be highly beneficial in the unlikely event you need to contact emergency services or see a health care professional.
Plan for conditions that may affect your chronic condition
Queensland’s warm climate for example can exacerbate conditions like, chronic lung disease, heart disease, and diabetes.
If you have lung disease, keep inhalers close at hand, as smoke from bushfires or pollen can trigger attacks.
Identify the closest hospitals or assess which medical centres and pharmacies are open during this period.
Don’t forget your regular GP may be able to assist you via telehealth.
Everything in moderation
Synonymous with Christmas are gatherings with a feast and few drinks.
Ensure there are light and fresh options, along with a selection of non-alcoholic drinks.
Whilst it is positive to see many of you will likely kick off a new exercise regime, please increase incrementally to prevent injuries
With a bit of preparation, I hope you can all have a safe holiday season.
