Hervey Bay local takes on Long Ride Home
1 min read

AMELIA Olsen, a Hervey Bay local, dedicated mother, author, and small school principal, is on an extraordinary journey, embarking on the Long Ride Home—a 15,000 km motorcycle trek across Australia to raise awareness for mental health through the Black Dog Ride charity.

Having lost her husband to suicide in 2015, Amelia is turning her grief into action.

Together with her son, she previously fulfilled their shared dream of riding to Cape York, a significant milestone that reignited her passion for motorcycling.

Now, she is set to make a greater impact by participating in the Long Ride Home, which took her and twelve other riders across diverse landscapes, engaging communities in crucial conversations about mental health.

Amelia, the only female rider in the group, is determined to shine a light on the challenges many face in silence.

“This ride is not just about the kilometers; it’s about raising awareness and fostering a sense of community around mental health issues,” Amelia said. “Every stop is an opportunity to share my story and connect with others who may be struggling.”

“We have people stopping to ask what we are doing, which then opens up a conversation around mental health”.

“People are donating cash as we ride pass or stop in at a Roadhouses”.

“Everyone is chipping in and helping each other out. We have other groups of riders that may need help with a brake-down and we just help.

“It’s like a mateship thing. You see big biker men on their Harleys opening up and showing emotion—something men don’t often do. We are slowly making a change.”

The Black Dog Ride, established in 2009, aims to break the stigma surrounding depression and has successfully raised millions for mental health programs across Australia.

Amelia returned to Hervey Bay on 24th October 2024.

Amelia’s determination and resilience are inspiring.

As she rides through the heart of Australia, she hopes to empower others to seek help and speak openly about their mental health challenges.
