AFTER a career-ending injury, Tracey MacDonald faced an uncertain future.
But today, the 47-year-old is making a significant impact in the lives of individuals struggling with substance use and mental health challenges at the Maryborough Correctional Centre, where she works as a caseworker for Drug ARM.
MacDonald, who spent 15 years as a diesel fitter before an injury changed her life, found herself grappling with what to do next.
Having experienced substance use herself, she was driven by a desire to understand and help others facing similar struggles.
This led her to pursue studies at TAFE Queensland, where she graduated last year with dual diplomas in Alcohol and Other Drugs and Mental Health. Reflecting on her journey, MacDonald said, “During that time, I wanted to step into a space where I could make a difference.”
Her lived experience has proved invaluable in her current role, where she’s known for her ability to connect with individuals on their path to rehabilitation.
“It’s a tough environment, but when I hear, ‘Miss, you helped me so much,’ that’s what makes it all worth it,” she said.
MacDonald’s path into this field began with a Certificate IV in Youth Work, followed by roles working with at-risk youth.
She later earned a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which opened doors for her to teach and mentor others.
However, it was her work with Drug ARM that truly ignited her passion for supporting those facing addiction and mental health challenges.
Studying under the guidance of TAFE Queensland instructors like Eileen Newman, MacDonald credits her education for giving her the tools to complement her personal experience.
“This course has removed the stigma for me. I’m not ashamed of my journey anymore,” she said.
Now, as she continues her work at Drug ARM, MacDonald looks forward to expanding her skills in group facilitation and therapeutic techniques like cognitive behavioural therapy, with the goal of bringing lasting change to the lives of those she helps.
Her story is a testament to resilience and the power of turning adversity into a force for good.
