SOME of Australia’s best senior tennis players battled it out on the Fraser Coast in June during a three-day tournament.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the 2024 Hervey Bay Seniors Tournament had attracted players from New South Wales, South Australia and throughout Queensland.

Ninety four players registered for the tournament which was inspiring for the younger players and greatly benefitted our economy, said Cr Seymour.

One of the competitors this year was Kerryn Cyprien from the Gold Coast, who has just returned from the World Seniors Championships in Mexico where she won two titles.

“Council’s sponsorship of this event is part of a three-year sponsorship agreement, during which the association will host three Australian Ranking Points Tournaments.

“This Sponsorship also includes the Junior Championships being held 20 – 21st July and the Hervey Bay Open in September.”

Cr Seymour said Council provided $3,000 in sponsorship to the tennis association to stage the tournament for three years (2023, 2024 and 2025).

“We want to provide opportunities for locals to be involved in the sporting and cultural activities that people in capital cities take for granted,” he said.

Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association President Geoff Arnell said it was fantastic that the club could stage national ranking events like this tournament.

“Since last year’s tournament, a lot of players have competed in World Seniors Events in Türkiye and Mexico bringing home World Title wins across several age groups,” said Mr Arnell.

“We greatly appreciate Council’s contribution and eagerly anticipate another outstanding tournament that will highlight Hervey Bay and tennis.”
