Torquay Caravan Park, an iconic Aussie holiday

Following up, and in support of letter from Graham. R, Urangan 6/3/25.

We are annual visitors to Torquay Caravan Park.

It’s our favourite park after trying the others over many years.

We bring our caravan for 2-4 weeks annually, and sometimes more than once a year.

We were horrified to hear of the Council’s proposal to demolish the Park for another green space!

Hervey Bay has the best Esplanade in Australia, at least 14 kms of green space with seating, picnic areas, bike and walking trails, exercise areas, water park, oval etc.

And that’s not including Gatakers Bay where there’s more of the same green space and bushland.

We’ve heard a “RUMOUR” that a Developer wants to build a high rise across from the park but WON’T build with a caravan park in front of it!!

We’ve also heard the “RUMOUR” that the Council can get as much money in rates from the development as it could from the park.

There are so many vacant blocks and derelict buildings along the Esplanade without a caravan park in front of them that could be developed, so why destroy an iconic part of the Bay’s history.

Sounds more like “GREED” than progress to us!

Cr Zane O’Keefe, Hervey Bay Advertiser, March 6,2025, p13 stated:

“This is about making sure these sites provide the best value and experience for our community and visitors now and into the future”

We feel this proposal is not in the best interests of the community and visitors.

Hervey Bay and the uniqueness of its caravan parks on the Esplanade have been attracting families for over 45 years.

They are iconic, giving the ordinary “Aussie” a wonderful holiday in a natural paradise.

We live in Ballina but do not visit the Gold Coast because of the unprecedented development of high rises and should this happen to the stunning natural Esplanade of Hervey Bay it would be a tragedy.

We would certainly look for an alternative place to spend our money if this proposal ensues.

Torquay Caravan Park make the Bay special

Dear Editor,

As a long time resident of Hervey Bay, I am concerned about the potential closure of Torquay Caravan Park.

This park is more than just a spot for travellers.

The caravan park has always been a welcoming space for families and visitors from all over.

It’s a great accommodation option that allows people to experience Hervey Bay in a unique way.

The proposed closure of Torquay Caravan Park would not only diminish the charm of our community, but it would also take away our local tourism.

Many of us rely on the park to bring in visitors who support our small businesses and contribute to Hervey Bay. Losing it would be a blow.

I urge all those involved to reconsider the future of the park.

This park is part of what makes Hervey Bay so special, and we can’t afford to let it slip away.

Dave, Torquay
