IN A WORLD where lifelong learning has become increasingly valued, global organisations like the University of the Third Age (U3A) are playing a crucial role in providing opportunities for intellectual stimulation and personal growth amongst seniors.
U3A stands as a testament to the idea that learning knows no age limits. With the beginnings dating back to 1972 in France, Australia was introduced to the first program in Melbourne years later in 1984 that has seen enormous growth in Australia.
There are now more than 200 groups in Australia with over 30 in Queensland. The nation proudly has more members per capita than any other country in the world.
Hervey Bay is also part of the phenomenon with their own branch.
Lyn Quince, President for U3A Hervey Bay, says it’s a group that aims to keep learning.
“It is a learning community organised by and for people who can best be described as being active in retirement –The Third Age of their lives”.
The “third age” reference is typically stated by the group as the period of active retirement.
“It is a volunteer-driven organisation that encourages retired and semi-retired individuals to come together and engage in a wide array of educational and social activities.”
U3A Hervey Bay offers a diverse range of courses and activities that cater to the varied interests of its members.
From literature and history to art, music, and physical fitness, participants can choose from a wide array of options. Workshops, study groups, and excursions provide avenues for exploration and hands-on learning.
Their objective is to maintain social engagement and the mental stimulation to keep people active in their next stage of life.
The community group enables members to take up new interests and to extend old ones. They draw on the experience of their strong membership while sharing the skills and energy of its members.
Their many courses include creative writing, French language, Mah Jong, Philosophy, British History and Recreational Art. The classes are quite informal and often come across as discussion groups.
“Our emphasis is on being friendly and informal”, says Lyn.
“Our motto is “learning for leisure and pleasure” so it’s important to us the atmosphere we create”.
Classes are typically for two hours duration and are held weekly, fortnightly or monthly during the week and depending on the classes.
U3A stands as a testament to the enduring human spirit that seeks knowledge and connection throughout the entirety of life.
In a world that often values youth over experience, U3A serves as a reminder that the wealth of knowledge and the joy of learning are timeless treasures accessible to everyone, regardless of age.
