All girls league comp launched in the Bay

THE HERVEY Bay RSL Seagulls have just launched their all new all girls league competition named the Seagals.

The club saw a niche in the market for an all girls competition since they saw a lot of girls come and go from the sport.

Junior President Chris Nash said, “I have seen a lot of girls join the sport but then get injured or they didn’t feel comfortable playing alongside the boys, therefore choose to leave the sport.”

“As a region we have struggled getting enough players to join the under 13 girls, this got us thinking of ways to overcome this hurdle.”

“In having a conversation with Danny Blair from the NRL Dolphins he made the suggestion of starting a mini all girls competition within the younger grades.”

“We put out an expression of interest and the feedback was incredible.”

“With that the Seagals was born.”

“The girls will play with their very own Seagals shirt. We kept the traditional Seagulls pattern but put the Seagals pink twist on it.”

Along with the clubs sponsors the club have had a lot of support from the clubs committee members, parents, Danny Blair from the NRL Dolphins and Rugby League Fraser Coast.

“With this being the first all girls mini mods program in Queensland, I feel it really is the future for our junior rugby league girls, not only here in Hervey Bay but all over Queensland.”

“We have approximately 120 players registered to play in the new all girls comp and the best part is 70% of these girls have never played rugby league before.”

The Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls hopes that programs like this will be happening in clubs all over Queensland to boost the future of the sport for girls.

The competition will run for five weeks starting on the 26th of July each Friday night at Ralph Starford Park. All training and games will be held on the same night across the five weeks.
